Oh dear Facebook
I took a hiatus from Facebook for a week. It was a time to
reflect and configure my life as the New Year came. I do not make any New Year
resolutions as more than seventy percent of those last for just a week. But I
do some introspection as to how my year was and what I intend to do in the
coming year.
Another reason was the outpouring from social media. I was
inundated with numerous updates, requests and advertisement on my Facebook. I
do appreciate the social media and in fact so many people on social media read
my blog that I have no right to complain. Many of my readers might get
offended. But my problem was various advertisers filling my page and several
friends recommending these. Plus groups, which are now redundant, pages that
usually, have trash and so on.
In fact one of my friends went a step ahead. She has deleted
her account altogether and has opened another one. This time she says she will
be careful in choosing friends on Facebook. A wise step. I personally stopped
making friends on Facebook long ago. I only respond to a request if I know
someone personally. Social media today has become a necessity and it’s a nice
and convenient way of staying in touch with friends and family. But when that
media starts to eat away your actual relationships or eats away your productive
time, it becomes a problem.
My strategy? Just check your Twitter, Facebook, Instagram
account twice a day. The world is going to remain where it is if you don’t spend
hours pouring over each update. The sun and the moon will still be there and
the earth is still going to rotate. Believe me I survived happily but then I am
not a Facebook addict either. But those of you who are, just read a few
articles on how this could destroy your health just as any other addiction can.
If you do want to take a New Year resolution, take one of leaving
the Facebook reading twice a day. Believe me, you will be happier.
So be it!!!
