It used to be such a lovely place where grandparents would be sitting with children playing. These days, due to paucity of space they don’t build verandahs any more. A balcony has taken its place.

A verandah or a balcony is essential part of the house as they provide a buffer between the house and the outside world. Vastu principles should be kept in mind while planning them.

A verandah is a covered place in front of the house, immediately after crossing the main gate. It should be in the north or east, but never in the south or west. If it is already in the south or western portion of the house, than it should be covered with a screen or curtain, at least in the afternoons. Or a larger verandah can be made in the north or east.

The verandah should be rectangular or square, but not in any other shape. No arches or rounded corners. Never allow a cut in it. It should be extended towards northeast.

The roof of the verandah should be lower than the rest of the house. It should never be made of tin or asbestos, lest it heats up the house even before entering it. It should be made of good material sloping towards northeast.

No heavy furniture should be placed in verandah. Only lightweight furniture should be placed in the south or west location so that the person sitting should face north or east.

Never a make a prayer room or strong room in the verandah. It is also not a place for a bedroom. There should not be any garbage can or litter in the verandah. It should be neat and clean.

Growing small flower plants in the verandah is good. Never put creepers in the verandah. Placing a basil plant in northeast part the house is always beneficial. Your house will be a place of peace and tranquility.

So be it!!!
