Brevity is the soul of wit
How right the Bard was. Our world is full of words. Words of wisdom, words to make us happy, words which soothe our souls and words which hurt us beyond repair. Humans are the only species who have the ability to speak. That is one thing, which distinguishes us from other animals.
But boy how we abuse our ability. Apart from shouting, fighting, cursing and making fun of each other through our language, we also then use them for preaching to others what we don’t practice, make promises we never intend to fulfill, tell white lies and circumvent our true intentions behind our flowery, sugar coated words.
We have stand up comedians who make us laugh through their words, poets who write long poems, speakers, who dwell on a single point at least three times because they have just about three points to tell you in a seminar of 3 hours. So they assume that people sitting there are a bunch of imbeciles and have to be told one thing five times. We have politicians making long speeches about the change they are going to bring once they are elected. We have TV anchors discussing non-issues in such a serious manner.
We have bloggers like me writing on a daily basis without worrying if their blogs are making any difference. We have ‘gurus’ giving long discourses on meditation and self-realization; we have novelists writing septologies and so on. Now we have another generation of emoji users. They are on the other spectrum of non-verbal communication. They express their love by heart symbols and use a fist to show they like something.
Half the time we can cut our ranting by at least 50 percent. Use relevant words without making preambles. Shakespeare must be turning in his grave. But then the Bard used millions of words to tell the story of Romeo and Juliet which could have been done in a few hundred words. So move over Shakespeare, we will use words and use them and hash them
Ha ha ha !!!
