Years ago my brother was posted in a remote town of
Maharashtra, India. My mum and I went to visit him and my mother, like any
mother, cleaned his unkempt room. My brother was furious. There is a method in
my madness here. I know where each thing is lying. That was not true of course
but he said that.
The quote is by, guess what, Shakespeare. There are more
than 800 phrases by him which we use everyday but don’t know that we are
quoting him. Well, this particular one is interesting because we all do have
our own system of keeping things or working in a particular manner. In other
words, our own whims and fancies. See? Shakespeare again.
If somebody disturbs that pattern, we get rattled and
sometimes so upset that it leads to big arguments. We like to fold our clothes
a certain way, we arrange our stationary in a particular manner. Sometimes the
behaviour can be compulsive and neurotic also. I am not going to delve into a Freudian
explanation of all that. But one thing is sure. All of us, to some degree or
other, have these habits. They give us a sort of discipline and a degree of
control. When that control is taken away, we feel lost and irritated.
We may say we have a method in our madness but the fact is
there is a madness and we enjoy that. Isn’t it?
So enjoy your madness
So be it!!!
