Eloquence of silence
What? Isn’t that a paradox? How can silence be eloquent? We have to express our feelings for others to understand. I was a chatterbox when I was younger, I still am to quite an extent. But as I age, I have realized that sometimes it’s better to keep quiet than express yourself.
All good actors play on this. They never make loud gestures or deliver long dialogue but they sit quietly staring into the camera. The pain they convey through that silence says way more than any dialogue could do.
If we are angry, instead of shouting and trying to prove our point, we can just keep quiet and sit patiently. More often than not, the other person will get the message and stop arguing, they will see the eloquence of silence.
In fact, we should all just sit quietly for some time every day according to Dr. Deepak Chopra. He asks just “to be”, to empty our minds of all thoughts and be still. But then that is where the cacophony of our thoughts start. They are loud and flood our mind. But as we practice, the incessant noise of our thoughts ceases and silence fills us, a silence which is very eloquent. It helps us to connect with the higher energy to make us realize our fleeting existence in cosmos and we experience pure bliss in that tiny moment . It doesn’t happen very often but when it does, it’s marvelous.
And it’s not just through some spiritual experience that we understand silence. Any art form can be that powerful. A painting, a piece of music, a sculpture, experienced in silence can talk to us much more than any introduction to it.
I try to sit in silence doing nothing for at least half an hour every day. No phone, no books, no television. And I enjoy my solitude.
Have you tried it? What was your experience? Please do share it as we can learn from each other.
May your silence be eloquent.
So be it !!!
