And then there was light
The winter is finally here and many if us are already
feeling SAD- Seasonal Affective disorder, a term coined by doctors for symptoms
of depression associated with winter. They recommend sitting before a light
lamp for fifteen minutes every morning so you feel cheered up. It is said it
gives us the required dose of vitamin D.
We used to sit in the sun in winters. Well, we can not do
that here because its too cold. So that lamp therapy makes sense to an extent.
But what about the old fashioned way of munching peanuts and story telling,
making candy on stove top and testing it every 30 seconds or the whole family
sitting by the fire in cosy blankets?
I think that is the best way to ward off depression in
winters. For that matter any depression. At least, most of the time. We are so
isolated from one another and ‘my space ‘ has become so important that we tense
up by the thought of meeting our family at Christmas. We complain that we feel lonely
but postpone the visit to our parents. We say we miss our childhood but cannot
find time to meet our siblings. We darken our hearts with real or imagined
unfairness of our family and make no efforts to bring the light of forgiveness
and love in our hearts. We light up our houses with hundreds of light bulbs and
don’t even light a small candle of affection.
So what are you going to do this holiday season? Come on ,
go ahead and light your heart with love and compassion.
So be it!!!
