Yamas

 Yamas !!


To our health ! Yamas is a Greek word and is often used as a toast. Remember the adage ‘if health is lost everything is lost’? We may have billions but if our health is not okay, all the riches won’t give us pleasure. Oh, we can get the best of medical care you could say . But will we really enjoy? 


If our relationship fails, we are miserable but human beings are resilient and we form new relationships but if sickness befalls, can we get a new body?


Every society has its own system to remain healthy. Cardiovascular exercise, muscle strengthening, flexibility are some key elements of exercise regime. Eating healthy, fasting and having a routine are important too. 


To me health is not just physical fitness but a holistic approach to physical, mental and emotional well being. If we are not mentally at peace or emotionally stable, physical fitness alone won’t make us healthy. Ancient systems like yoga, tai chi, shamanic way of healing through air, water, fire and earth give us a holistic view of health. Yoga is not just an exercise for fitness, it’s a lifestyle that helps us in maintaining our balance in all aspects of life. So is tai chi. Both systems are rigorous and demand concentration and practice.


Modern life brings with it lot of stress and never before we had so many cases of hypertension and heart disease. Life is fast and to keep up with it, we pay a price in terms of our health. As long as we focus on our physical, mental and emotional health, we can enjoy. Going to gym alone won’t help, having a hobby, spending time with family and friends really can make a difference. Remember the study conducted over a period of 65 years where they found that people who had happy relationships with their friends were healthier?
